Losing weight is high on a lot of people's lists these days, but many people with good intentions make the mistake of sticking to cardio or calorie restriction and overlooking weight training. These people don't realize it, but they're sabotaging their efforts by ignoring this crucial aspect of fitness.
Losing weight vs. losing fatWhen people say they want to lose weight, what they really mean is that they want to lose fat. The number on the scale isn't really what matters - losing a limb would bring that number down, but obviously that wouldn't be beneficial at all. Likewise, losing muscle mass would lower a person's weight, but it would increase his or her body fat percentage and overall fitness level. Excess body fat harmful to one's health, and it's that excess body fat that should be lost. In order to lose fat but not muscle, a regular weight training routine needs to be adopted. And for the ladies out there, don't worry - weight lifting won't cause you to bulk up unless that's really what you're trying to do. Work out with a fitness trainer for extra help meeting your goals, or become a fitness trainer yourself and learn how to help others discover the great benefits of weightlifting.
